MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSES

Introduction

MOOCs are free online courses available for anyone to enrol. MES PONNANI COLLEGE, PONNANI is promoting MOOCs of different platforms among the students and faculties. The institution is a SWAYAM – NPTEL Local Chapter since December 2017.

SWAYAM [Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds] is a programme initiated by MHRD, Government of India. President Pranab Mukherjee launched the SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA platforms to facilitate imparting education to all. The SWAYAM program offers digital classrooms with the help of internet and satellite connectivity and provides online study material to students free of cost.

In order to ensure best quality content are produced and delivered, there are nine National Coordinators have been appointed under the SWAYAM project. The national coordinators are NPTEL, UGC, AICTE, NIOS, CEC, IGNOU etc,

UGC- Annual Refresher Programme in Teaching (ARPIT) is a major and unique initiative of online professional development for higher education faculty using the MOOCs platform SWAYAM. After successful completion of ARPIT, an online exam will be conducted. The learner will be issued certificate of completion of course and clarifying the online exam which will be equivalent to one refresher course of UGC for CAS as notified by the latest gazette of UGC (DOLetter No. F.2-16/2002(PS) Pt.fI.II dated 3rd December, 2018).

Objectives/Outcomes

• Enable students and faculties to do an online certification course from NPTEL and get a certificate from the IITs.
• Provide an affordable and flexible way to learn new skills, advance the career and deliver quality educational experiences at scale.
• UGC – ARPIT certification and the Joint certification by AICTE-NPTEL makes it authentic and recognizes it for promotions under CAS for higher education faculty

Activities

• SPOC requests HOD’s to appoint class tutors and class representatives are faculty and student coordinators of Nptel Online Courses from each department
• Meeting of NOC coordinators
• SPOC inform about new courses or any procedural changes to NOC team
• SPOC displays brochures on notice boards if provided by NPTEL
• SPOC along with the team encourage students and faculties to enrol in the courses before the last enrolment date
• Departmental coordinators maintain a record of students and faculty enrolment details
• SPOC is in continuous touch with IIT’s, SWAYAM,  departments coordinators and students
• SPOC keeps a track on number of enrolments and trouble shoots problems
• SPOC recommends scholarship to deserving candidates
• SPOC appoints mentors for NOC
• SPOC along with coordinators encourage students to appear for exam
