The department was started in 1995 to cater to do the needs of students aspiring to higher studies in the field of fisheries and Aquaculture. Apart from M.Sc in Aquaculture and Fisherymicrobiology department have successfully completed B.Scprogrmme   in Industrial Fisheries and an innovative Postgraduate program in Fish processing and quality control funded by UGC. An Add on course entitled” Commercial production of Ornamental Fishes” has also been conducted with assistance from UGC. The department was elevated to a research Centre in 2006 and the department offers Ph.D. programs in the field of Fisheries and aquaculture. Four research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. so far. It is the only department under Calicut University offering Ph.D. program in aquaculture and allied subjects.
